Where interior paint fits

Inside the house, paint is a finishing trade, and the order matters. It comes after the walls are closed and sanded, and before the floors go down. Ladders, drop cloths and wet rollers are rough on new flooring. So we ask one question first: what else is happening in this house?

If the answer is nothing, we repaint what is there. If the answer is a remodel, a roof leak that stained a ceiling, or new flooring, we put the paint where it belongs in the sequence. The overview of all painting is on the painting page. Outside walls are covered separately on the exterior painting page.

What we paint inside

  • Whole-house repaints. Every wall, ceiling and trim surface, scheduled room by room so you can stay home.
  • Single rooms and accent walls. A bedroom, a living room or a hallway.
  • Ceilings. Smooth, textured and popcorn, plus high ceilings that need staging.
  • Trim, doors and casings. The surfaces your hands and shoes touch most.
  • Repaints after a remodel. Finish paint after a kitchen or bath project.
  • Cabinets. A separate process, covered on the cabinet painting page.

Prep decides the finish

A good interior paint job is mostly done before the paint is opened.

  1. Patch. Nail holes, dings and hairline cracks are filled and sanded flush.
  2. Spot prime. New patches absorb paint differently from the wall around them. Without primer they show through as dull spots.
  3. Block stains. Water marks, smoke and marker bleed through ordinary paint. A stain-blocking primer stops it.
  4. Caulk. Gaps at trim and corners are sealed for clean lines.
  5. Protect. Floors, furniture, vents and hardware are covered.

Then two coats, with the edges cut cleanly at ceilings and trim.

Arizona details inside the house

Dry air. Arizona's low humidity means paint dries quickly. That helps schedules, but it also means lap marks if the work is rushed, so walls are rolled wet edge to wet edge.

Dust. Dust settles on baseboards and window sills all year. Surfaces are cleaned before paint goes on or it does not bond.

Sun-faded walls. Rooms with big west or south windows can show uneven color where furniture or art has been. Repainting the whole wall, not a patch, evens it out.

Leak stains. A brown ring on a ceiling often traces to a roof flashing or an attic plumbing issue. We tell you if it needs roof repair before it needs paint.

What moves the price

Most painting projects run $8,000 to $15,000, confirmed at the free assessment. For interiors what moves it:

  • Total wall and ceiling area, and ceiling height
  • Number of rooms and how much furniture needs moving
  • Condition of the walls and the repairs needed
  • Textured or popcorn ceilings
  • Trim, doors, casings and built-ins
  • Number of colors and any dark-to-light changes that need extra coats
  • Whether the home is occupied or empty

A smaller home with a few rooms is below that range's top. A large home with high ceilings, trim and repair work is not.

We help you choose by room. Hallways and kids' rooms get a more washable sheen than a formal dining room.

Living in the house while we paint

Most interior repaints happen with people at home. We work room by room, tell you the day before which rooms are in use, and keep the work area sealed from the rest of the house. Furniture is moved to the room's center and covered, then put back. Paint products are chosen with ventilation in mind, and we leave windows and doors usable between days. If you would rather be away, we can schedule the job for the days you travel.

When to call

  • You are repainting before selling or after moving in
  • A remodel is ending and the finish painting is next
  • Walls are scuffed, stained or faded
  • A leak was fixed and the ceiling needs repair and paint
  • You are putting in new floors and want the paint timed first

The assessment takes about an hour, costs nothing and you keep the written plan either way.

Interior painting FAQ for Phoenix area homeowners

How much does interior painting cost in Phoenix?

Most painting projects run $8,000 to $15,000, confirmed at the free assessment. For interiors the number moves with square footage, ceiling height, how many rooms, and how much patching and trim work there is. We price after walking the rooms.

Should I paint before or after new flooring?

Before. Rollers drip, ladders scratch and sanding dust settles. Paint comes after drywall and before floors, with a touch-up pass once the floors are in.

Do you paint ceilings and trim as well as walls?

Yes. Ceilings, baseboards, door casings, doors and built-ins can be scoped with the walls or priced separately. We list each so you can choose.

Can you cover water stains and smoke marks?

Yes, with a stain-blocking primer. If the stain came from a roof or plumbing leak, the leak must be fixed first or the stain comes back. We check the source.

Can you paint popcorn or textured ceilings?

Yes, they can be painted. Heavy texture soaks up paint and takes more material, which we account for in the price. If you want it removed first, that is a separate scope.

How long does a whole-house interior repaint take?

It depends on size, the number of rooms and the prep. We give you a written schedule at the estimate and tell you in advance which rooms are worked on each day.
