When painting cabinets is the right call
Cabinets are the largest surface in a kitchen, and the cheapest way to change how it looks is to change their finish. If the boxes are solid wood or good plywood, the doors close properly and you are happy with the layout, painting can make a dated kitchen feel new.
It is the wrong call when the boxes are water-damaged or swollen, the layout does not work, or you plan to replace counters and appliances in a way that moves the cabinets anyway. In those cases we say so. Painting cabinets you are about to tear out is money wasted. Our kitchen and bath remodeling page covers the larger scope.
The process, in order
The sequence is what separates a lasting finish from a peeling one.
- Label and remove. Doors, drawer fronts and hardware are taken off, numbered and mapped so each goes back where it came from.
- Degrease. Cooking oil film, hand oils and cleaning residue are removed. This is the step most failed jobs skipped.
- Repair. Dings, gouges, open seams and old hardware holes are filled and sanded flush.
- Sand. The existing finish is scuffed so primer has something to grip.
- Prime. A bonding primer matched to the existing surface goes on, since wood, laminate and thermofoil take it differently.
- Finish. Two coats of a hard cabinet-grade coating, applied by spray or fine-finish technique for a smooth surface.
- Cure and reinstall. Doors rest while the finish hardens, then go back with hinges adjusted so they close evenly.
What cabinets can be painted
| Solid wood | Plywood or MDF boxes | Laminate or thermofoil | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paint-ready | Yes, with grain filling if you want a smooth look | Yes | Possible with the right bonding primer |
| Watch for | Grain showing through | Swollen edges from water | Peeling or lifting edges |
| Our approach | Fill or leave the grain, your choice | Repair swelling before paint | Test adhesion first, tell you honestly |
If a surface will not hold paint, we say so before we price. A failing thermofoil door is a replace-the-door decision, not a paint decision.
What moves the price
We do not publish a number for cabinet painting. What moves it:
- Number of doors, drawer fronts and boxes
- Whether boxes are painted outside only, or inside too
- The existing finish and the repairs needed
- Color change, such as dark to light, which needs more coats
- Smooth versus visible grain
- Hardware replacement or drilling for new pulls
- Islands, pantries and bathroom vanities added to the scope
A small galley kitchen and a large kitchen with an island and pantry are very different jobs. The written price after the walk lists each part so you can add or drop pieces.
Arizona specifics
Dry air. Wood in Arizona homes dries and moves. Seams open and doors warp slightly. We repair open seams and check door alignment so paint does not crack along them.
Kitchen heat. A range in a hot kitchen bakes grease onto the cabinets nearest it. Those get extra degreasing.
Dust. The Valley is dusty, and dust in a wet finish shows. The work area is cleaned and sealed before finish coats.
Hard water. In bathrooms, mineral residue on vanities can interfere with adhesion. We clean and test.
Where cabinet painting sits in the order of operations
Cabinet painting follows the dirty work and precedes the final touches. In a remodel, drywall and wall paint come first, cabinets and counters follow, and flooring goes in last, with a final touch-up at the end. If the room is just getting repainted, we can do the cabinets together with the walls. See interior painting for that scope, and the painting overview for how it all ties together.

Cabinet painting FAQ for Phoenix area homeowners
How much does cabinet painting cost in Phoenix?
We do not publish a price range for cabinet painting because it depends on the kitchen. The number moves with how many doors and drawers there are, their condition, the current finish and the color change. You get a written price after we see the cabinets.
Is it better to paint cabinets or replace them?
If the boxes are solid and you like the layout, painting is the lower-cost update. If the layout does not work, the boxes are damaged or you want new counters and a new footprint, a full remodel is the better route. See kitchen and bath remodeling.
Will painted cabinets chip?
A proper job resists chipping, but no painted surface is chip-proof. Durability comes from degreasing, sanding, the right primer and a hard cabinet finish, not from an extra coat. High-contact areas around handles and the range show wear first.
Why is degreasing so important for kitchen cabinets?
Years of cooking leave a film of grease that stops primer from bonding. Skip it and paint peels in sheets. Degreasing is the first step, not an extra.
Does dry Arizona air affect cabinet paint?
Yes, it speeds drying, which can leave brush or spray marks if the product is not suited to it. Finishes are chosen and applied with that in mind. The same dry air can also shrink wood, so open seams get repaired.
How long are my cabinets out of use?
Doors and drawer fronts are usually off for several days while they are finished and cured. We give you a written schedule so you know when the kitchen is usable again.
